Please note: IBAN numbers only apply within Europe; you will need to supply a SWIFT, BSB, Account Number and branch address to make an international payment to your Australian Commonwealth Account.
What is a Commonwealth Bank BSB number?
A BSB is a 6 digit number that identifies banks and branches within Australia. It stands for "Bank-State-Branch". You will need to include the BSB of the receiving account when transferring money from your account to a third party account. A Commonwealth Bank BSB starts with 06, for example, 06 - _ _ _ _.
What do I need to do to activate my account?
For security, the London office places a withdrawal stop on your account. This is removed when you attend your nominated branch in person to be identified by your nominated staff member. You will need to take your passport and the account opening letter you will have received on your account being opened with you to the branch. Once you have been identified the Australian staff member will remove the account stop, provide you with your debit cards and go through any other banking questions / needs you may have.
Please note: if you have opened a joint account both named account holders will need to attend the branch.
What do I do if I can’t attend my nominated branch to be Identified and pick up my debit cards?
We have a dedicated International Customer Services branches in the capital city of each Australian State, but if you are looking to move to a different town or city, please notify the London office 2 weeks before your arrival so we can find the nearest branch to where you are moving, order your debit cards and notify the branch staff of your arrival.
What is a Relationship Balance and how do I benefit from it?
A Relationship Balance is the sum of a customer's savings and borrowings balance in contributing accounts held with the Commonwealth Bank.
If you:
- have an aggregate of savings and borrowings of AUD $50,000 or more (Relationship Balance)
- as at the second last business day of the month
- held in eligible contributing accounts
- which you own either individually or jointly
then you are exempt from monthly account and withdrawals fees as shown in the table below on eligible accounts which are:
- held in your name individually
- held by you jointly with the same joint account holder/s as the contributing account. The balance of joint contributing accounts is apportioned equally among the parties to the account.

How is a Relationship Balance calculated for Single and Joint accounts?
If you own accounts either individually or jointly then in the following month you are exempt from certain fees on those accounts which are:
- Held by you individually.
The Relationship Balance is calculated from accounts held by you individually as well as any accounts held by you jointly. The balance of a joint account is apportioned equally among the parties to the account.- Held by you jointly.
The Relationship Balance is calculated only from accounts held by you jointly with the same joint account holders.
